I'm not a horror movie fan; I have seen only a few (and mostly within the last five years or so). Like you, I was tempted to leave The Substance early, but I had tickets for another film following it, so I had no real incentive to exit.
While I think the movie would have benefitted from losing about 20 minutes in the middle, it was worth staying for the final 20 minutes or so. What a horrific, amazing, disgusting, creative, and truly hilarious payoff!
